Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks - "Senator"

Malkmus-mail:

"Hey its May 2011-- and we have some updates. Yeah, the new album is called "Mirror Traffic". There was a lot of deliberation on the album title front but in the end we went the cryptic route--for some reason "Madonna in Love" didnt swing it with the test market. FOr a long stretch when it was gonna be called "L.A. Guns", but with lawsuits flying left and right these days, I was talked off the ledge by cooler minds. This is bad form to talked about what might have been, Negative Hypnosis, but in the age of tell-all I thought I'd join in. We recorded it with Beck over the last year. It took a while to finish due to "Life"--the actual "rock hours" were pretty reasonable........in fact 68% of the tracking, vocals included, took place on one day, a first for me. We pretty much left it all out there, so look for 50 minutes of tunage, 13 songs, and LOTS of good times. Also, Janet Weiss is not with us anymore--over the last year she started Wild Flag .....its a growing concern--We couldn't hit the daily double. We wish her well in her future shredding. ... THe silver lining --- Jake Morris of the Joggers and newly hatched Night Moves has assumed the throne, and it's a pretty swank fit. Look for us in all the usual places in September.
THats all for now. Thanks y'all

Cass McCombs - Wit's End (2011)

"You never really tried to love me."

“With each release, Cass McCombs has proven himself a wordsmith of great economy and precision. His compositions, often sparse and non-traditional, paired with his melodies and arrangements, transform into subtly revealing songs, filled with depth of emotion and meaning. It is that precision that would lead one to believe that all the autobiographical material a person would seek about McCombs is embedded in the songs (and you'd be right) but then he would insist after the fact that your deductions couldn't be more off the mark about what is truth and what is simply artistic expression. Light in its darkness, claustrophobic in its panorama, distant in its intimacy, present in its timelessness; WIT’S END should be given one’s full and undivided attention” -Kris Gillespie, Domino Records

London Sessions

lcd is playing at my house

“the london sessions is a unique ‘john peel session style’ 9 trk encapsulation of one of today’s most acclaimed acts in perhaps their rawest and most original recordings to date.
the session itself was recorded in one day at the pool/miloco studios in south london on june 29th 2010, in the week following this year’s triumphant glastonbury performance. it was locked in order to record tracks for dissemination across the globe through the medium of contemporary rock radio; fans of lcd soundsystem will know that radio sessions are something that have never been a staple of the band’s career thus far because of the belief in the necessity to maintain the highest quality of all sonic recordings released into the ether.
the set which spans the breadth of their career to date, perfectly captures the intuitive live evolvement of lcd as a band. here nothing is replicated with computers, everything instead is recreated in real time, tougher, looser and less clinically. It features tracks from all of their studio albums to date, as well as long lost b-side classic ‘yr city’s a sucker’ and is a must for any fan of the band. the tracks were subsequently mixed by james murphy in nyc at dfa’s plantain studio & mastered by his longtime cohort bob weston in chicago." We Have Sound (2005)

shake to the dancefloor

With We Have Sound, Tom Vek lives up to his hype and proves he is more than the sum of his numerous influences. In many ways the album's mix of funky guitars, electronic flourishes and belligerent beats seem to sit alongside other new wave revivalartists such as Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. But additional elements of lo-fi rock and even jazz make it hard to define, though very easy to dance to. (bbc)
